Shokunin Tattoo

It is 9:43am. I am emailing the screen printer to confirm the schedule for receiving our newest FAUSTIAN shirt. I set up a time to come approve the silver ink mix.

It is 9:57am. I email my dog’s neurologist. I’m wondering if we missed anything by only doing neutral positioning and not flexed dynamic imaging during the MRI.

It is the mid-day. I return calls for inquires on my company’s services while responding to a competitor who missed the registration date. I fix myself a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios so I can take Naproxen for the pain of sitting. I think about how it is Omar Little’s favorite cereal too, a character from the same show that inspired the name of my dog Avon Barksdale. I spend some time with him, changing his diaper after he fails to feel his body’s needs again.

It is 2:09pm. I finish my phone calls to each client, confirming who is closed for New Year’s. I finish approving art and the ad campaign for a new client.

It is past midnight. I email my manufacturer contact to make sure I did not forget the team tournament medals. Turns out I nearly did.

It is 3:02am. I check to see if SCVI is on sale for the holidays. It is not. A reminder to run my company’s payroll goes off. It’s the last thing I do before I go to sleep.

FATE’S CROSSING IN BRIDGE CITY is in two weeks when I wake up.

PNW SOULCALIBUR IN 2025

The idea of FATE’S CROSSING IN BRIDGE CITY (FC) first happened in July of 2024. I just quit another events company I had originally worked with to give SOULCALIBUR VI (SCVI) a larger presence in the US. To make up for it, I worked with PDX FGC mainstay Battle Lounge to produce BATTLE LOUNGE 2024 with two months. It was held in a local brewery, so we were able to drink to the conclusion of the Secret Boss Santa series I had done for three years while also toasting to the future of SOULCALIBUR I had planned for 2025.

My FGC work for 2025 was dominated by running a local I concluded in October following the news of the venue’s upcoming sale, heading up CORE VALUES, OR’s regional, with my new event partner Raine, and assisting with the continued stability and growth of our local SOULCALIBUR scene. I thankfully had a lot of help from our three newest members of FAUSTIAN in that regard and want to give them personal shoutouts:

  • Marigram: Marigram found us from a random Twitch chatter (a Marigrammer she’d call them) mentioning our local scene. She came out to one of our locals and…well, you’d normally say the rest is history, but it wasn’t quite that succinct. Marigram (smartly) took her time to get to know us and decide for herself if she was wanting to invest into our local SCVI community.

She grinded the game, helped with commentary, and was the first person I could call for help with random tasks, from everything to photo shoots to hunting down chairs at a local office liquidator. We’re so fortunate she went all in on us, as her generosity and self-motivation to take charge and get shit done was invaluable to everything from spontaneous gatherings to trips to majors such as Frosty Faustings. She has been an overwhelming positive influence on the scene and a big help with the organizational wrangling that was solely on me for many years.

  • Juice!: Juice! ran the New! Souls on the Block (N!SOTB) monthly tournament series in 2025, which helped budding talent such as Daydream and Enby Frenby (who both attended FC) to get in competitive experience while learning the game in a beginner friendly environment. N!SOTB has been instrumental in helping cultivate local interest in SCVI, not just with Juice!’s dedication to the event series, but by also being an enthusiastic ambassador to the local community.

Additionally, Juice! became my floor manager for CORE VALUES, handling everything from brackets to random gofer work that needed to be done. Much like Marigram, their work has been largely self-sufficient and initiated by themselves and their desire to support PNW SOULCALIBUR. This was yet another chunk off of my organizational plate, which combined with Marigram’s efforts, made my work for FC possible.

  • REPLICAMODEL (formerly Mikamystic): REPLICAMODEL first contacted me about getting into competitive SCVI scene in 2022. At the time, I was running our monthly in a local metal bar, so she was unfortunately unable to attend being underage.

Nevertheless, she stuck with the game and reached out again in 2023, then became a bigger force for local SCVI in 2024 after doing what was months of recruitment from other younger gamers who were as young as 16 when the game came out. REPLICAMODEL had found as many players in the twilight of our game as I had during its heyday, reeducating the locals of our presence. Whenever a local asks about any title in the SC franchise now, someone REPLICAMODEL has proselytized SCVI to knew to direct them to us at FAUSTIAN. This, plus countless help with various locals and tournaments, made her a huge help in 2025 to making PNW SOULCALIBUR one of the largest active communities in the world.

It is 9:56am. I am emailing the venue to see if I can add an alcohol vendor to my company’s insurance so our preparty doesn’t have to be dry. It doesn’t work.

It is the midday. I’m putting the finishing touches on a report for my dog’s neurologist. I won’t be able to continue research until after the event, so I’ll just wait for the doctor to tell me if anything I’ve written is useful. I wonder if I will be able to host casuals at my home during FC with Avon’s condition.

It is 4:12pm. The first photos of our new shirts are in. The silver looks great. They will be done the Thursday before FC’s preparty, just narrowly making the cut.

It is 5:58pm. I help some competitors confirm their rooms with our hotel, while assist others with AirBNBs and specific requests for places to eat beyond my list.

It is the evening. During dinner, I cycle out and update a dozen PS4s. I may have to spend another $800 on SCVI if it doesn’t go on sale soon.

It is 2:34am. Avon can’t make it outside in time. He’s getting worse. I order more specialized cleaning products. I clearly can’t host anything at my home during FC.

It is 3:36am. I check the Playstation store before bed. SOULCALIBUR VI finally went on sale. Thank Okubo.
